Even when she was just reading the main narrative portions, Crick sounded either disdainful or bored. In fact, her grandmother mentioned how Gillian could speak French with hardly any accent, so why the heavy-handed accent in English? I've also heard a lot of female narrators do better men's voices. While she was raised in Italy, her mother and grandparents, who had raised her, were all English so I think English would have been her first language, or at least she would have learned it at the same time as Italian, so I doubt she would have had such a strong accent. I questioned whether even Gillian would have had an Italian accent. Unless I misheard and misunderstood the story, her mother was born and raised in England of English parentage and was only called a "contessa" because she had married an Italian count. The narrator kept giving the heroine, Gillian, and her mother an Italian accent, which drove me crazy and took me out of the story. What would have made My Fair Princess better?Ī different narrator. I felt like Christian came off as controlling and stalkery like certain other Christians I could name. I didn't like how the couple seemed to revel in their latex allergy, despite the fact that both of them had been with other people. The scenes with the therapist felt way too similar to The Sopranos, like it was a cheap attempt to show us that Christian was deep. It's still leagues better than any mafia romance I've read but it didn't have the vivid, cinematic, larger-than-life element that drew me into the first book. Gianna's sarcasm started to get less witty and more childish and Christian just felt like a pale, washed-out imitation of Nico. something went wrong and it took me forEVER to get through this book. I thought this would be just as amazing as the prequel.Īnd then. I loved her outfits and in the beginning, I loved her smart mouth and her attitude. She's basically like Harley Quinn if Harley Quinn were a mafia princess (so basically Margot Robbie a la Birds of Prey). And who is his love interest but Gianna, Nico's stepmother. Obviously that meant I couldn't wait to jump into the sequel, THE MADDEST OBSESSION, which is about Christian Allister, the dirty fed who's in deep with the Abellis. It was like watching a movie unfold in book form and I couldn't put it down. I normally hate mafia romances but after I finished TSO, I was thinking about Nico and Elena for days and how explosive their chemistry was, and how much I loved the action sequences and the show-not-tell elements of the story. I was obsessed with book one, THE SWEETEST OBLIVION. Together, they will decide the future of mankind. Mysterious, smooth-talking power players who lurk behind the scenes. Nightmarish villains with superhuman enhancements.Īn all-seeing social network that tracks your every move. David Wong has created a unique and immersive world that is sure to keep readers on the edge of their seats from start to finish. Overall, I really enjoyed Futuristic Violence and Fancy Suits and would highly recommend it to fans of science fiction and action-packed novels. The dialogue is clever and the plot is full of twists and turns, making for a highly entertaining read. The story follows Zoey, a young woman who is thrust into a world of danger and intrigue when her estranged father is killed and she inherits his role as the leader of a powerful crime family.Īs Zoey inherits the complex and often dangerous world of the future, she encounters a cast of memorable characters, including gangster-like employees, comic book-like villains, and a group of misfits who are all fighting for their own piece of the action. Futuristic Violence and Fancy Suits by David Wong is a wild and imaginative ride through a futuristic world filled with colorful characters and over-the-top action. Joyce’s technical innovations include an extensive use of the interior monologue and other experimental narrative techniques the use, in Finnegan’s Wake, of a unique language of invented words, puns, and complex allusions and the use of a complex network of symbolic parallels drawn from mythology, history, and literature. Irish novelist, short-story writer, and poet, James Augustine Aloysius Joyce is regarded as one of the greatest literary talents of the 20th century and is known for his revolutionary innovations in the art of the novel. His soul swooned slowly as he heard the snow falling faintly through the universe and faintly falling, like the descent of their last end, upon all the living and the dead. It lay thickly drifted on the crooked crosses and headstones, on the spears of the little gate, on the barren thorns. It was falling, too, upon every part of the lonely churchyard on the hill where Michael Furey lay buried. It was falling on every part of the dark central plain, on the treeless hills, falling softly upon the Bog of Allen and, farther westward, softly falling into the dark mutinous Shannon waves. Yes, the newspapers were right: snow was general all over Ireland. The time had come for him to set out on his journey westward. He watched sleepily the flakes, silver and dark, falling obliquely against the lamplight. A few light taps upon the pane made him turn to the window. They form the building blocks of his tale and from them flow descriptions and commentary on historical events. The Discoverers (as well as The Creators and The Seekers) resonates with tales of individuals, their lives, beliefs and accomplishments. In the deep recesses of the past, they remain anonymous."
